2005 Hobby Stock Results
#7 Hobby Stock
3-26-05 Race 1 of the Texas Outlaw Bomber series. Due to
a bad draw, I had to start last in my heat. I was stuck behind a
car who was smoking really bad, and all I could see was the flag
man black flagging him. After several laps, I passed him and
moved up into fourth when I noticed I had no oil pressure. I let
off the gas to pull off the track and the pressure came back. I
continued and finished fifth. Top 3 qualified for the main so I
had to go to the B. As I pulled out to the B, the car died and
could not restart. We did not make the feature, and when we got
to the shop, we found we had broken a piston and cracked the
block.

4-16-05 Hot Rod Hill Motorpark. Hobby Stocks were off so
we ran with the Street Stocks. The track was really rough and I
finished 3rd in my heat. During the heat, the left front upper
control arm bent, making it hard to turn in the feature. In the
feature, I finished 6th, having to limp it around the track.

5-7-05 Hot Rod Hill Motorpark. Hobby Stocks were on the
schedule, as were the Street Stocks. Only 2 Streets showed up,
so they ran with us. I started at the back of the Heat, and
finished at the back. I was able to drive through 1 and 2 wide
open, but could not turn in 3 and 4. After checking the stagger
on my rear tires, I had 1/2 inch of negative stagger. I put a
smaller tire on the left rear, giving me 3 inches of stagger.
During the feature, I started at the back again. The car was
very loose. I moved into the top five when I spun out and was
hit on both sides as I spun.. I had to go to the back again, but
was able to move back up to fourth, crossing the finish line
bumper to bumper, to bumper with the lead 3 cars. One of the top
3 was a Street Stock, giving me 3rd place points.

5-11-05 Motorama Speedway. TOBA raced it's first Friday
night race of 2005 at Motorama Speedway. A good draw put me on
the pole of the second heat. I led the first couple of laps, but
a red flag for a car flipping, put some fast cars right on my
bumper. I finished fourth and started mid pack in the Feature.
We made a weight change in the feature, making the car very
tight. I was running in the top 10 when an accident between the
422 and 3 occurred in front of me, causing me to lose a couple
of positions. With 3 laps to go, I got spun in turn 2, dropping
me from 10 to 16th.
5-29-05 Dundee Motor Speedway. The first of three Sunday
races was set to go, but the rains washed out the race. The race
was rescheduled for Monday, but our car was unable to return.
6-18-05 Hot Rod Hill Motorpark. Back again at my home
track. I drew the pole again, but the new setup on the car was
way off, making the car very loose. The crew made some changes
to tighten the car up for the feature, but made it a little too
tight. We started last in the feature and moved up the field to
fifth going across the finish line right beside the fourth place
car. The car was tight, but we will make changes again for the
July 2nd race, along with a motor change.
7-23-05 Back at Hot Rod Hill, new motor and new front
springs. I drew the pole again, starting pole in the 3rd heat.
Doug Ivey hot lapped the car, but was unable to drive it. I
started the race, took the lead, and won my heat race by 6-7 car
lengths. Because of the invert, I got the pole again for the
feature. I lead the first 6 laps and finished 4th out of 21
cars. This was my first heat win and my best feature run.

7-30-05 With the momentum of a good run from the
following week, we were ready to run again on Saturday. During
hot laps, I felt that my right rear shock was going away,
causing the RR tire to bounce. Points leader James Huff, crew
chief on the #7, had motor problems during hot laps so we gave
him the #7 to drive so he could get his points. James finished
2nd in the heat, and started outside row 2 in the feature. James
took the lead from the 7t on lap 5 with the 05 of John Shaw on
his tail. Both Shaw and Huff raced fast and clean and on lap 18,
Shaw made a move and took the lead. Both cars made contact and
cut the #7 left front tire. James was able to still finish 2nd
in one of the best races we have ever participated in. Congrats
to John and James and an awesome race.

8-6-05 Texas Outlaw Bombers made their way to Hot Rod
Hill for race 10 of their series. Our #7 started outside row 2
and held fourth in the heat race until I got caught up in the
marbles on the high side. I ended finishing last in the heat
race which put me dead last in the feature. The feature was very
rough, but I was able to maneuver around wrecking and slower
cars and moved into 3rd. Jay Sater(J13) and John Shaw(05) were
first and second were a straightaway ahead. Coming out of turn
four, I almost lost control, having to drive through the
infield, letting the 73T get by for third. I nearly got third
back by the end of the race, but couldn't get around him high or
low. We finished fourth, one spot from receiving a trophy from
the Texas Outlaw Dirt Series.

8-20-05 We made some changes to the #7 and went to Hot
Rod Hill to race the Hobby Stocks. During Hot Laps, a plug wire
came off, and the car started to back fire. After putting the
plug wire back on, we ran the heat, but the back fire continued.
We finished last in the heat, and were starting last in the
feature after replacing the plug wire. The car continued to
backfire, but not nearly as bad. We were able to dodge some
wrecks and finish in 6th.

8-27-05 After changing spark plugs at the shop, we went
back to Hot Rod Hill for another run at the Hobby Stocks. The
car ran good, finishing 3rd in the heat race. Unfortunately,
points leader James Huff was involved in a wreck in his heat,
and in order to get points, he drove the #7 in the feature.
James drove conservatively and finished 5th, 2 spots behind his
closest points contender.

9-4-05 Off to Cleveland for the Sunday Series finale.
Saturday night, 9-3, teammates James and Janette Huff clinched
their championships in the Hobby Stock and Pure Stock classes at
Hot Rod Hill. During Hot Laps, we had a major oil leak causing
too much smoke and were black flagged. After repairs to the oil
leak, we started outside pole in the heat race, but finished
last, due to the loss of all the shims in our right front
suspension. After repairs to the suspension, we finished fifth
in the B main and qualified for the feature. Starting mid pack
in the feature, we began moving forward in the first couple laps
when on an extremely sandy track, we spun and as we entered the
infield, another car hit our left rear at full speed, wrapping
the wheel around the hub and into the frame. We finished 23rd.

10-15-05 Back to Gator Speedway in Willis for the first
time in over a year. Due to the track already having a #7 car,
we were sporting the 703 number on our car for the night. The
track was smooth, but the car was very tight. We started the
heat race in 5th and finished 3rd, qualifying for the main
event. We started the main in 10th place, fighting a tight car
and dealing with lots of lap traffic, we were able to move to
e8th place, but an error made in scoring placed us in 9th(a lap
car was given a top 10 finish). This was our final dirt race of
the season as we prepare the car for the Houston Autorama and
asphalt racing in the winter. The car will be dressed with a
1992 Chevy Lumina body for 2006.
